Charles Eugene “Gene” Kelley

Charles Eugene “Gene” Kelley, 91, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at Scott Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 30, 1927 in Clark County, Indiana, the son of the late Charles B. Kelley and Iva (Broady) Kelley. Gene graduated from Scottsburg High School in 1945 and was the co-owner of the old Kelley & Dean Motor and Farm Equipment Company in Scottsburg, Indiana. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he had served as a trustee and was on the building committee. Gene was the founder of the Leota Frolic and donated the watermelons for the famous watermelon eating contests. He enjoyed traveling with his friends, being in the garden and camping. Gene also enjoyed helping the widows in the community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae (Dean) Kelley who passed away on June 29, 2013 and an infant brother. Survivors include two sons, Larry Kelley and his wife Ruth and Jerry Kelley and his wife Joan all of Scottsburg, Indiana; two daughters, Diana Colvin of Bardstown, Kentucky and Debbie Marquart and her husband Jim of Crestwood, Kentucky; three brothers, George Robert “Bobby” Kelley of El Paso, Texas, Rev. Williard Kelley of Cooksville, Tennessee and Wilbur Kelley of Bonita Springs, Florida; a sister, Patricia “Girlie” Zollman of Scottsburg, Indiana; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Funeral service: 12:30 pm on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Leota, Indiana with Pastor Bruce Bridgewater officiating. Visitation: 9:30 am until 12:30 pm at Bethel Baptist Church. Cremation is requested following Gene’s services with burial at a later date in Bethel Cemetery.
