Clayton Duane “Clay” Brooks

Clayton Duane “Clay” Brooks, 78, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Meadow View Health & Rehab Center in Salem, Indiana. He was born on March 16, 1939 in Mansfield, Ohio, the son of the late Arthur Brooks and Mable (Hoover) Brooks. Clay was a U.S. Veteran serving in the U.S Marine Corp and U.S. Army. He served in the Marine Corp. from 1956-1959. After he was discharged from the Marine Corp, he worked at the U.S. Steel Mill in Mansfield, Ohio. Clay then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961 and was Stationed in France and Germany. In 1965, he was with the Big Red One Unit which was to be the first to go into Vietnam. After his service in Vietnam, he was assigned to Ft. Ord, California, where he met his wife. Clay was later stationed in Alaska, Ft. Mead, Maryland, Korea, Ft. Knox, Ft. Davis, Panama and lastly at Ft. Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania, where he was part of the support team for the Vietnamese Refugees. He was discharged from the Army in 1976. Clay then retired in 1993 as a forklift foreman for the U.S. Census Bureau in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he worked for 34 years. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6582 and a member of the American Legion Post 234 in Scottsburg, Indiana. Clay was married on April 1, 1972 to Elizabeth Sue (Colbert) Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robby and Matthew Brooks; one daughter, Angela Sue Brooks; seven brothers, David, Don, John, Alan, Mike, Mark and Danny and three sisters, Erma, Wanda and Marjorie. Survivors in addition to his wife Elizabeth include a daughter, Sallie Moore and her husband Scott in Shelby, Ohio; a son, Christopher Brooks of Scottsburg, Indiana; a sister, Joan Alfrey and her husband Tim of Ionia, Michigan; two grandchildren, Justin Fields and Ashley Bowman and her husband Robert and three great grandchildren, Robert, Makaya and Aubrey Bowman.

Funeral Service: 1:00 pm Monday, July 3, 2017 at Collins Funeral Home with Pastor Darrell Johnson officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Sunday and after 11 am Monday. Interment will be in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.
