Doyle W. Hobbs

Doyle W. Hobbs, 88, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Veterans Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on July 31, 1930 in Scottsburg, Indiana, the son of the late Lawrence Albert Hobbs and Esther (Whiteside) Hobbs. Doyle was a scale mechanic for the old Charlestown Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, Indiana, where he worked for 25 years. He also worked as a belt sander for the old Smith Cabinet Company in Salem, Indiana for 15 years and was a member of the Mt. Eden Christian Church. Doyle joined the U.S. Army during WW II when he was only 16, and after the military discovered his age he was discharged. He enlisted again during the Korean War and served in the 27th Infantry Regiment in a group called the Wolf Hounds. Doyle was a member of the American Legion Post # 234 in Scottsburg, Indiana, enjoyed NASCAR, gardening and fishing. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma (Bennett) Hobbs; his second wife, Irma J. (Kretzer) Hobbs; a daughter, Sandra Hobbs; four brothers, Donald, Max, Ralph and Emmett and five sisters, Maxine Hobbs, Marjorie Gettelfinger, Lois Cheatham, Lucille Pieper and Janet Robison. Survivors include a son, Michael L. Hobbs of Scottsburg, Indiana; three daughters, Gail Peyman of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Teresa Brewer of Salem, Indiana and Stacy Tucker of Arcadia, Florida; a stepson, Nicholas Harp (Andrea) of Ferncreek, Kentucky; two stepdaughters, Ann Marie Simon (Rocky) and Candy L. Baldwin (Mark) all of Scottsburg, Indiana; a brother, Russell Hobbs (Barbara) of Columbus, Indiana; fourteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Memorial Contributions to: Mt. Funeral Service: 11:00 am Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Collins Funeral Home with Bro. Bruce Stephenson officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Friday and after 9 am Saturday at Collins Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery near Scottsburg, Indiana.
