Esther H. Smith, 92, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Scott Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 10, 1924 in Lanesville, Indiana, the daughter of the late Christian Hertling and Anna (Dietrich) Hertling. Esther was baptized and raised in the Lutheran Church and graduated from Lanesville High School in 1942. She was a retired employee of the old Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, Indiana and a former cook at the Scottsburg Middle School. Esther was a member of the Vienna Baptist Church, Farm Bureau, former member of the Rural Youth Association, where she met her husband, former Scott County 4-H Leader, enjoyed bowling in the Scottsburg Women’s and Senior Bowling Leagues and loved to play Euchre and working Crossword Puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Kenneth Smith; a young grandson, Grant Christian Smith; a brother, Walter Hertling and four sisters, Lillian Hertling, Martha Lopp, Frieda Blank and Doretha Faith and a special friend, Ernest Abner. Survivors include a son, Jack K. Smith and his wife Barbara of Charlotte, North Carolina; a daughter, R. Susan Hensley of Scottsburg, Indiana; four grandchildren, Jesse J. Hensley, Justin K. Smith and his wife Kellen, Kara M and Evan M. Smith and one great grandson, Jones Karlin Smith.
