John Oaks, 84, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016 at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. He was born on September 28, 1932 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, the son of the late Harrison and America (Little) Oaks. John served in the U.S. Air Force for seven years, then retired from the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War. He also was a retired foreman for the Indiana State Highway Department, where he worked for 17 years. John was a member of the Scott County VFW Post # 6582, the Scottsburgh Lodge #572 F&AM, Scott County Shriners Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and former member of the Scott County Moose Family Center # 2324. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Oaks; a son, Allen Begley; a grandson, Nicholas Ryan Carl; three sisters, Thelma Page, Edna Combs and Geneva Kallembach and four brothers, Elmer, Charlie, Billy and his twin brother, James Oaks. Survivors include two sons, Johnny L. Begley of Athens, Georgia and Alvin Begley and his wife Teresa of Scottsburg, Indiana; two daughters, Betty Begley-Golden and her husband Bobby of Morristown, Tennessee and Darlene Begley-Carl and her husband Mitch of Stitzer, Wisconsin; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Begley of Scottsburg, Indiana; two grandchildren, Johnathan Carl and Tyler Joseph Golden and his wife Alli; two great grandchildren, Tanner and Audrey Golden and numerous generations of nieces and nephews. Funeral Service: 1:30 pm Friday, December 16, 2016 at Collins Funeral Home with burial in Scottsburg Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 7 pm Thursday and 12:30 to 1:30 pm Friday.
