Margaret Ellen Smith, 93, died July 7, 2016 in Kokomo, Indiana. Margaret was born on May 21, 1923 in Scottsburg, IN. The daughter of Harry and Adalaide Strouse. On August 24, 1940 she married Max E. Smith in Scottsburg. Three daughters, Ellen, Edythe and Elaine, were born during their 63 year union. All three preceded her in death. Max died in 2004. She was one of 6 Strouse siblings. Bill, Elmer, Olive and Emma all preceded her. Brother John (Lois) Strouse survives in Yorktown, IN. Margaret is also survived by 3 grandsons, Mike Wisehart in Kokomo, Ed (Broni) Wells and Eric Wells both in Colorado. Also surviving are 5 great grandchildren, Sister in law Ida Rena Strouse of Kentucky, Son in law Emerson Wells in Illinois, and several nieces and nephews. A life-long devoted Baptist, Margaret first accepted Christ at Leota Baptist Church in rural Scottsburg. In 1958 the family moved to Kokomo and she immediately moved her membership to the First Baptist Church. She was very active and in 2000 was named “Woman Of The Year” at First Baptist. Margaret was also very active for years in the Post 6 American Legion Auxiliary. Margaret was a dedicated gardener and grew many beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables. She was also an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed being of service to many Kokomo clients. A visitation will be held at Kokomo’s Eller Funeral Home, 3400 S. Webster from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 15. Memorials may be directed to Bona Vista Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services, 1220 Laguna St., Kokomo, IN 46902 or the recipient of your choice. Bona Vista is where daughter Elaine received excellent care and compassion for many years, giving Margaret relief from providing constant care for Elaine. Funeral services
will be held at Collins Funeral Home, on Saturday July 16.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m to 11 a.m. with services immediately following.Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in rural Scottsburg.
