Wendell L. Rutherford

Wendell L. Rutherford, 76, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on August 21, 1940 in Lynch, Kentucky, the son of the late Willie Otis Rutherford and Preshie Elizabeth (Halcomb) Rutherford. Wendell was a retired gunner and gun crew leader at the old Jefferson Proving Grounds in Madison, Indiana. He had started working for Jefferson Proving Grounds and transferred to Yuma (AZ) Proving Grounds for a period of time before returning to Madison and retiring. Wendell graduated from Deputy High School in 1958, was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the American Legion Post # 234 in Scottsburg, Indiana. He was married on July 23, 1973 to Helen M. (Amick) Rutherford, who preceded him in death on June 5, 2012. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margaret Bowers and Joyce Masters. Survivors include two sons, Scott R. “Randy” Richey and his wife Tish of Scottsburg, Indiana and Marty Richey and his wife Cindy of Raymond, Mississippi; two daughters, Kelly Eggleston and her husband Philip of Warner Robins, Georgia and Jill Baker and her husband Dale of Scottsburg, Indiana; a sister, Yvonne Kreeger and her husband David of Bluffton, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Jimmy, Brittney, Jonathan, Jacob, Dawson, Caroline, Abby, Ellen and Macy and five great grandchildren, Cindy, Lola, Emily Jo, Natalie and Nash. Memorial Contributions: Ride For A Cure c/o Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana.

Funeral Service: 10:00 am Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Collins Funeral Home with David Colbert officiating. Visitation: 5 to 8 pm Tuesday and after 9 am Wednesday at Collins Funeral Home. Military graveside services will be following the funeral at Scottsburg Cemetery.
