Coleta Turner Smith, 81 of Lexington, Indiana, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014 at King’s Daughters Hospital in Madison, Indiana. She was born on September 22, 1932 in Nocona, Texas, the daughter of the late Otis and Goldie May (Mason) Turner. Coleta attended Hanover College and Indiana University and was a former elementary school teacher at Kent, Lexington and Commiskey Elementary Schools before deciding to be a stay at home mother and homemaker. She was a 69 year member of the Scaffold Lick Baptist Church near Blocher, Indiana, where she was involved in the Women’s Missionary Society and served as a Bible School and Sunday School Teacher. She was a former board member of the Jefferson County American Heart Association, was a 4-H Leader in Scott County, volunteered for Girl’s, Inc. of Jefferson County, Indiana and was always willing to volunteer for any organization or person needing help. Coleta was preceded in death by a brother, Hice Turner and a sister, Theta Dixon. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Carson T. Smith; three daughters, Carleta Nienaber (Mark) of Columbus, Indiana, Cheryl Hoffman (Daniel) of The Woodlands, Texas and Connie Leap (Douglas) of Madison, Indiana; two brothers, James O. Turner of Lexington, Indiana and Wendell K. Turner of Cathedral City, California; two granddaughters, Amanda and Angela Leap and several nieces and nephews.
