Cosco Retiree Passes at 90. Long time Columbus area resident and Cosco retiree Edith J. Stutsman passed away Monday morning at her home, the Silver Oaks Health Campus, after a several-year struggle with Age-Related Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. – She had recently turned 90. Mrs. Stutsman was born Edith Jane Gibson on 19 Feb 1924 to Sanders and Gracie (Hall) Gibson in Gray’s Knob, KY, just outside Harlan. – Having spent most of her formative years on the family farm near Lerose in Owsley County, she, along side her immediate family, relocated to Scott County, IN, in the Spring of 1939 in search of better educational and employment opportunities than those that existed in Kentucky at that time. It was here in Scott County that Edith met the love of her life, Edward Ellsworth “Buck” Stutsman. – Ellsworth and Edith were married 07 Aug 1941; they bore two sons, Gerald Edward and Douglas Layton, both of whom preceded her in death in 2011. The Stutsman family moved to the Columbus area in June 1960 after Ellsworth had secured a better-paying job at Hamilton Cosco. – Mrs. Stutsman first worked at the former Roviar Shirt Factory; she then followed her husband to Hamilton Cosco, where she worked along side her sister, Lena Stewart, as an Industrial Seamstress for twenty-something years until retirement. Steadfast Christians, Ellsworth and Edith attended the Seventh Street Church of God for many years. – In more recent times, Mrs. Stutsman enjoyed taking fellowship and worshiping with the congregation of The First Assembly of God on Tenth Street. Edith enjoyed cooking, homemaking, gardening, playing both the piano and guitar, traveling and, more than anything, the study of the Holy Bible. Mrs. Stutsman has been preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edward and Steve Gibson, sisters Lena Stewart and Bertha Perkinson Bradley, her husband, and as previously mentioned, her two sons. – She is survived by her sister, Wanda Goodin of Austin, her daughter-in-law, Barbara Stutsman of Columbus, her daughter-in-law Evelyn Stutsman of Bedford, and her grandson, S. E. Stutsman of Scottsburg. Services were conducted by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home in Columbus and Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg. Interment was in the Scottsburg Cemetery. Memorial Contributions will be graciously accepted to either The American Heart Association or The Alzheimer’s Association.
