Evelyn C. Walker

Evelyn C. Walker, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2017 with family at her side. She was born Evelyn Charlotte Burress to the late Maude and Everitt (Spuncie) Burress in Cross Plains, Indiana, Evelyn happily lived her childhood in Ripley County IN. She attended Central High School in Madison and later married Bernard Gordon and had two daughters Glenna Joann and Sheila Kay. Together they worked the family farm. After husband Bernard’s passing, Evelyn moved to Madison and worked various jobs until she met Raymond Walker while working at Jefferson Proving Ground. Raymond and Evelyn were married in 1957 and had a son, Darrell Duane, in 1959. The family, including son Steven Ray, lived in Scottsburg, IN and enjoyed a life of part-time farming and travelling …especially to Daytona Beach Shores. Evelyn was a homemaker who never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with her many good neighbors. She loved cooking, playing cards with family and friends, playing guitar, piano, writing songs and poetry, and spending time with her cousin, Violet Pelsor. She could also be found caring for her beloved cat, Duchess. Evelyn was a lifelong Christian and attended several area churches. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands’ Bernard and Raymond, brothers Wilmer and Damon Burress, sister Mary Risk, daughter Sheila Kay Lewis and great grandson Sean Wimsatt. She is survived by daughter Glenna Joann Gordon, sons Steve (Samantha)Walker and Duane Walker, grandchildren, Marla (David) Theiring, Mark Scott and Michael Scott, Michele (Jim) Wimsatt and Lindsey Walker, several great grandchildren and special friend and caregiver, Nickie Covey.

A private memorial service was held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Collins Funeral Home with burial in Scottsburg Cemetery.
